Networks / co-operation

The IfL is actively involved in national and international research networks. The Institute has intensive co-operative relationships with universities, colleges and academies as well as non-university research institutes and geographical societies and associations. The national and international contacts are being developed on a continuous basis. They include contacts with research institutes and experts in the spatial sciences as well as from other disciplines in the humanities and social and economic sciences.

National co-operation

The IfL co-operates closely with the University of Leipzig, whith which it shares some posts. The Institute has close working contacts with the other three spatial science research institutes in the Leibniz Association: the Academy of Spatial Science and Regional Planning in Hannover, the Leibniz Institute of Ecological and Regional Development in Dresden and the Leibniz Institute for Regional Development ans Structural Planning in Erkner. Together with the Research Institute for Regional and Urban Development in Dortmund they constitute an efficient and unique competence network of spatial research in Germany, the 5R Network.

The 4R+ co-operate in specific projects with other institutes such as the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) in Bonn.

International co-operation

As a basic principle, the IfL carries out its international research with local partners. Currently project and co-operation agreements exist with university and academy institutes in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Riga, Klaipeda, Sofia, Cluj-Napoca, Budapest, Minsk, Lviv and Poznań.
