Information for map enthusiasts

nationalatlas.de

The Internet portal for atlases and atlas cartography offers information, updated on an ongoing basis, on national collections of maps, as well as direct access to the Web-based cartographic collection offered by the IfL. In addition, around 2,000 maps from the National Atlas of Germany can be called off online via the portal. This is aimed not solely at cartographers and scientists involved in spatial research, as well as teachers and journalists, but also at all those who are keen on analogue and digital cartographic presentations of material, for the broadest range of other reasons. Further ranges of maps and atlas products

The IfL utilises subject-specific maps and infographics in order to put the results of geographical research  "in a nutshell" and to make spatial information readily comprehensible at a glance. Apart from printed collections of maps, the IfL is developing and implementing digital and Internet-based forms of presentation for the visualisation of areas and of the spatial dimension. Geovisualisation

This area of research ranks on equal terms alongside the IfL’s fundamental research into regional geography. The areas of emphasis are as follows: the further development of topic-specific maps of Germany and Europe; the testing-out of innovative techniques in producing atlases specialised according to topic; the technical and didactic further development of electronic and interactive atlas modules; the analysis of the ways in which forms of  visualisation exercise an effect; and the development of target-group-specific forms of presentation in cartography.
