Nature-loving citizens gather valuable information about our domestic animal and plant life day after day. Researchers from the IfL and the Leibniz-Institut für Wissensmedien, together with the Dachverband Deutscher Avifaunisten, are developing a new generation of interactive online maps for the web portal ornitho.de. The aim is inspire even more people to capture biodiversity. The IfL coordinates the joint project.

The new web maps are intended to facilitate the entry of data and to improve their presentation and processing. First of all, the requirements of ornithologists for such visual evaluations will be surveyed. Also in the course of 2018 the cartographic platform will be programmed. The aim is to evaluate the observations at the level of districts or landscape units. With the start of breeding bird mapping in the spring of 2019, all interested citizens will then have the opportunity to actively participate in the project. The new online tools should later be used as free software by other Citizen Science projects. The researchers also want to find out to what extent user-friendly visualisations can motivate people to participate in citizen science projects and acquire the necessary knowledge and skills.

The Internet portal ornitho.de is operated by Dachverband Deutscher Avifaunisten. Partners are local, national and international associations as well as the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation and other authorities. In October 2016, about 18,000 people were registered on the platform, over the app "NaturaList" more than 22 million records were transmitted.

"Experiencing biodiversity" is one of 13 projects for the promotion of civic science projects, for which the Federal Ministry of Education and Research will provide a total of around 5 million euros in the period from 2018 to 2021.
