Digital visualisation of regional geographical information

The trend towards an increasingly digital world affects more and more areas of life, including our habits of perceiving and processing information. Traditional concepts of collecting and presenting regional geographical data need to evolve, in order to provide orientation for younger user groups and contemporary sociological debates.

In the project, researchers of the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL), as a non-university research institute, cooperate with colleagues of the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IÖR), Media Centre of TU Dresden and the Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities and seek to develop and to promote new approaches of regional geographical research and visualisation.

From a substantial perspective on regional geographical information, the project aims at focusing on interdependencies of socio-spatial developments and their impact on politics, administration, economy and society. From a technically innovative perspective regional geographical information will be edited and prepared for output formats of mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones.

The proposed mobile application shall provide a deeper understanding of the physically perceived surrounding by offering additional interactive information.
Within the project researchers will focus on two areas of research in the middle saxonian region Lommatzscher Pflege; a rural landscape between the cities of Riesa and Meißen. Whereas one section draws attention to the city of Lommatzsch, the other section concentrates on a characteristic agricultural landscape in the Ketzerbachtal.

The digital format of communication complements a print volume on the Lommatzscher Pflege of the Landschaften in Deutschland series which is currently under preparation. The series of books is edited by the IfL and the Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
