Interko2 – Integrated living space concept in metropolitan areas

The joint Urban-Rural-Plus-Project, which is funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research, implemented under the leadership of the IfL in cooperation with two regional partners (Leipzig City and District) and the University of Jena. The project aims to develop an integrated living space concept in the metropolitan growth area of Leipzig/Halle by help of an iterative and cooperative participation and negotiation process.

Essential prerequisite for the development of the integrated living space concept is the establishment of an effective monitoring system. Its purpose is to analyze and visualize local sub-concrete data on development trends and to identify small-scale development requirements. Through a cooperation approach based on the central location principle, residential requirements and spatial locations for housing developments, as well as new forms of function sharing in the urban-rural area must be discussed and tested for practicability. Closely linked to this is the analysis of integrated mobility solutions, which form an essential basis for a sustainable living space concept in metropolitan growth areas.

The three modules monitoring system, cooperation space approach and integrated living space concept, which compiled in the R&D phase for the region of Halle/Leipzig, will transferred to the region of Jena/Saale-Holzland District. The project will tested for their generalizability and applicability in other regions and critically evaluated regarding sustainability and target relevance of the modules.

The joint project is being implemented with the support of other associated partners. These are: City of Halle (Saale), District of Northern Saxony, Saalekreis District, City of Jena, Saale-Holzland District, Metropolregion Mitteldeutschland (Central German Metropolitan Region), Mitteldeutscher Verkehrsverbund GmbH, Regionaler Planungsverband Leipzig-Westsachsen (Regional Planning Association Leipzig-Westsachen), Verband Sächsischer Wohnungsgenossenschaften e. V. (Incorporated Society of Association of Saxon Housing Cooperatives).
