New Polish Migration to Germany – local perspectives

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is considered as a region in Germany where the effects of demographic change have advanced to a high degree and thus are already clearly visible. Mostly induced by the out-migration of young people, the state of demographic change in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is perceived to be 30 years ahead. Since the German reunification the total population of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has decreased by 15 per cent or 290.000 inhabitants (Statistisches Amt Mecklenburg-Vorpommern 2011). At the same time a rising number of foreigners, especially from EU countries, has been registered. This group of international migrants is dominated by people from Poland who are for the most part living in the border region.

From political view the in-migration of Polish migrants holds substantial possibilities to restore the economic and demographic balance in the region. However, the integration of Polish migrants into the local communities – which until now are hardly experienced with a peaceful coexistence of different nations and cultures – poses a large challenge for public authorities and the citizens as well.

The aim of the project is to investigate how migrants from Poland get integrated into the local communities of the border region in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, how they are support ed, and how their presence is perceived by public authorities, companies and the inhabitants of the region. The investigation concerns both the social and the economic integration as well. The project follows a multi-perspective approach that includes the perceptions of Polish migrants as well as the views of German institutions and citizens.
