Sofia – future city: green, mobile and attractive for living

Participation models for citizens, the administration and the economy

The application-oriented project created in Sofia for the first time a basis and instruments for the development and implementation of sustainable city concepts with the participation of the Sofianite citizens. Actors that had previously been opponents were able to enter into a constructive dialogue, decision-makers of the city, citizen initiatives, companies and citizens have formed a proactive partnership thanks to the intervention of the project. As a result, Sofia today represents an example of best practice for a sustainable urban development with a model function for other cities.

In the course of the project, two international conferences, a workshop with members of the city administrations and eight meetings with citizens have been held. Twelve schools and 1200 students have participated in 20 eco-lessons. Apart from that, a working group on city development has been founded.

By means of the interactive City Observer platform, the manual "Ideas and proposals of Sofianite citizens for the improvement of environmental and life quality in Sofia" as well as a collection of best practice examples from Germany, the preconditions were established for Sofian citizens to be engaged in local decision-making processes in a long-term and diversified manner. Furthermore, the new instruments allow for coordinated activities of both citizens and political administration.
