SpielRäume – Landscape as a Space of Discoveries and Experiences

© Leibniz-Institut für Landerkunde

The project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, develops new methods to teach students about their region in a playful way and to stimulate interest in issues on regional geography. Previous approaches have hardly reached this target group in particular. There seems to be a lack of teaching material that uses modern media in order to prepare the corresponding content in a contemporary form for extracurricular learning locations.

In this project, the IfL team cooperates with the Naturpark Barnim in Wandlitz as a practical partner. Together with schools of the region, concrete examples in the nature park are used to illustrate the multi-layered experience of human-made landscapes and their transformation at various levels. Digital games for smartphones and tablets will be developed and tested in their basic functions; in the first phase of the project, three location based games on different phenomena and developments in the urban and suburban environment were developed: Gamer will be able to follow the history of the use of a Volkspark, deal with the problem of the abandoned property and their subsequent use, as well as with questions of neighbourhood development, or follow the historical transformation of a landscape from a sewage field to a recreational area in fast motion.

In particular, the interconnection of digital as well as physical experience while being on site will allow information and connections to be better absorbed and processed. This has been demonstrated by initial practical tests with students.

For the evaluation of the project, a critical-reflexive analysis of the game-development-process is planned. On the basis of the results, the project team will design process descriptions and recommendations for action which will make it possible to transfer methods of Digital Game-based Learning to other extracurricular learning locations as well as to other subject didactics.
